Prof Mahatim Singh Memorial Award 2014

Dr RS Chhokar graduated with Gold Medal and did M.Sc & Ph.D from CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar in the discipline Agronomy securing first position. Presently, he is working as senior scientist (Agronomy) at Directorate of Wheat Research, Karnal and involved in the research, co-ordination and extension programme of the Directorate. Dr. Chhokar has 16 years of research experience in wheat and barley. For the past sixteen years, he was associated in 13 institutional and 4 national and 3 international externally funded projects. He also handled about 40 contract research projects as Project Leader. He has made significant research contributions in the field of weed management in wheat based cropping system with special emphasis on herbicide resistance management, wheat agronomy, and conservation agriculture.

He reported the first case of multiple herbicide resistance in Phalaris minor and metsulfuron resistance in Rumex dentatus in India, and developed their effective management strategies. He has also developed effective weed management options for wheat, rice and barley. He has published 57 research papers in international and national journals, 6 book chapters, 55 popular articles, and 26 research and extension bulletins. He is recipient of the Distinguished Scientist Award 2008 by Society for Recent Development in Agriculture, DWR Best Field Scientist Award 2013 and fellow of the Indian society of weed science 2013.
