Dr. S. V. Sai Prasad, Principal Scientist (Plant Breeding) and Head, ICAR-IARI, Regional Station, Indore is awarded Dr. S. Nagarajan Memorial Award 2019 for his outstanding contributions to wheat breeding.
Dr. S. V. Sai Prasad obtained his graduation and post graduation degrees from Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, Hyderabad, and doctorate from IARI, New Delhi. Besides this he did PGDHRM, MBA and PGDIRPR from IGNOU, New Delhi, and PGDTMA from NAARM, Hyderabad. He was awarded Gold Medal for securing First position in PGDTMA
Dr. Sai Prasad is a wheat breeder who played lead role in bringing back the cultivation of durum wheat and its popularization in Central India. He developed five improved durum wheat varieties – HI 8663, HI 8713, HI 8737, HI 8759 and HI 8777 and five genetic stocks. He contributed significantly in bread wheat improvement also and was associated with the development of nine improved varieties and thirteen bread wheat genetic stocks viz., HIKK 01 to HIKK 13. Dr Sai Prasad has guided 2 Ph. D and 15 M.Sc. students and published ~54 papers in national and international journals.
Dr. Sai Prasad is recipient of V.S. Mathur Memorial Award and Outstanding Achievement Award in Plant Breeding, He also received various national and international awards as team member; BGRI-Gene Stewardship Award; Nanaji Deshmukh ICAR Award for Outstanding Inter-disciplinary Team Research in Agricultural and Allied Sciences; ICAR Award for Outstanding research in Agricultural and Allied Sciences. Dr Prasad is Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), Society for Advancement of Wheat and Barley Research (SAWBAR), Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding (ISGPB).
