Prof Mahatim Singh Memorial Awardee 2018

Dr. Satish Kumar, Senior Scientist (Plant Breeding), ICAR – Indian Institute of Wheat & Barley Research, Karnal is awarded Prof Mahatim Singh Memorial Award 2018 for his contributions in wheat improvement.

Dr. Satish Kumar, presently working as Senior Scientist (Plant Breeding) at ICAR –Indian Institute of Wheat & Barley Research, completed his master’s in Plant Breeding & Genetics on hybrid wheat research and the doctorate degree on wheat end-use quality from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. He joined ICAR –IIWBR (erstwhile DWR) as an ARS Scientist in the eld of Plant Breeding during 2009. During the short span of nine years at ICAR-IIWBR, Dr. Kumar contributed extensively in wheat improvement programme and is associated with the development of ve wheat varieties (DPW621-50, DBW71, DBW90, WB2, and DBW173) and ten genetic stocks for different biotic and abiotic stresses of wheat. He is associated in many institutional and external funded research projects as PI/Co-PI. He has been trained at Cornell University on the development of molecular markers for rust resistance in wheat.

Dr. Kumar has published his research in over 27 peer-reviewed national and international journals. He has also published 13 book chapters, 21 technical articles, 42 popular articles, and e-publications. He has recently been awarded the prestigious ‘Gene Stewardship Award – 2018’ by Borlaug Global Rust Initiative (BGRI).
